Remember when Google rolled out continuous scrolling for desktop search in December 2022? Well, that’s now a thing of the past. The company has decided to return to traditional pagination.
According to Search Engine Land, a Google spokesperson confirmed that continuous scrolling will officially end on June 25, with similar changes expected for mobile search soon.
For now, both desktop and mobile users can still experience continuous scrolling, but this will likely change shortly as the new format takes effect.
Google stated that this shift aims to deliver search results more quickly and efficiently, focusing on results users actively request rather than automatically loading additional content. The company also indicated that continuous scrolling did not significantly boost user satisfaction with the search experience.
While Google contests claims about a decline in search result quality, it’s possible that user satisfaction may still be affected by this change.
The new pagination format will resemble the previous setup, featuring the familiar elongated “Gooooooooogle” logo along with numbered pages from 1 to 10 below it.
This change might not bode well for pages beyond the first, as they could see a reduction in clicks. However, one clear advantage is the faster loading times for search results—if only the results themselves had fewer ads and less spam!
