AI Rivals Can’t Dent Google Search Traffic, Report Reveals

New data from Datos’ clickstream panel, analyzed by Sonata Insights, shows that Google’s search traffic continues to rise, despite the increasing presence of AI-powered competitors. Even with the emergence of advanced AI-driven search platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Copilot, and other niche engines, Google’s dominance remains largely unaffected.

According to data shared by Rand Fishkin on the Sparktoro blog, Google experienced a modest 1.4% increase in search traffic from May 2023 to May 2024. “In May 2024, Google saw a slight rise in desktop visits compared to the same time in 2023, growing by 1.4%, while the leading AI search engine, Perplexity, achieved a significant 42% year-over-year growth, reaching 15.69%,” Fishkin explained.

The report includes a comparison chart that highlights Google’s performance against its AI search rivals. While the actual numbers aren’t displayed, the chart illustrates just how much larger Google’s user base is compared to the competition.

Fishkin emphasized Google’s continued dominance, stating, “Google had over 290 times the number of search users as Perplexity in May.” He also pointed out that Google users conduct roughly 200 searches per month, compared to Perplexity’s 15 searches per user. Fishkin concluded, “Perplexity’s users are about 7.5% as active on the platform as Google’s users are on Google.”

Earlier, there were questions about whether Google had lost market share to Bing in May, but the data confirms that it has not. Although there are ongoing predictions that traditional search might eventually slow, Google continues to hold a significant lead in the search market for now.
